I think that, with this move you will lose the existing ppl.. <-- This is my opinion...
My opinion is to give a "fake" counter system for some weeks or whatever... on the site...
for example, if the server has now 47ppl online the counter will show 147 ... (every time 100 more than the real number - this number can change..).
it sound idiotless (and evill) but i let you think about it...
